Artwork of the Month: Surgeon Waiting by Barbara Hepworth

19 March @ 12:30 pm - 1:00 pm

Our next Gallery talk will be held – please note – in the third week of the month, on Wednesday 19 March, and at 12.30, not 1pm. Dorothy Nott, one of our most popular and accomplished speakers, will be talking about Barbara Hepworth’s Surgeon Waiting.

Dorothy writes: “While Barbara Hepworth is better known for her sculptures, her drawings of scenes from the operating theatre are powerful expressions of her artistic skill. As an anonymous surgeon wrote in the forward to an exhibition at the Lefevre Gallery: ‘Rarely has an artist been found with both stamina and vision who can portray the sincerity and harmony, the power and the beauty, the rhythm and tenderness and the simple drama of the operating theatre’. Surgeon Waiting is a fine example of this aspect of Hepworth’s work with its intense focus on the hands and the eyes, the surgeon’s most important tools of his/her trade.”

Members are reminded that entry charges have been re-introduced at the Gallery so do remember to bring your membership card for free admittance.
