‘The Picturesque’ – a talk by Peter Miller, President of the Friends
Peter has sent the following introduction to his talk: “William Gilpin (1724-1804) in his Observations on the River Wye, first published in 1772, defines The Picturesque as follows: ‘as that particular kind of beauty which is agreeable in a picture’. This rather bald definition describes an idea that has antecedents in the seventeenth century and is a term that we still recognise and respond to today. It feeds on a variety of eighteenth century aesthetic theories and can be a seen as a forerunner of the Romantic Movement. My talk will, I hope, form an introduction to this influential concept and be illustrated by one or two examples from the Gallery’s own collection.”
This talk is free of charge and booking is not required, but members are reminded to bring their membership cards for admission to the Gallery.
